DISCOVERING, DEVELOPING AND DEMONSTRATING YOUR TALENTS
One of the constant concerns of the youth is how to use their strength and resources in worthwhile and rewarding activities. They all want to be assured that they have potentials, skills, gifts, talents, resources and that they are useful. This is a good concern.
Have you ever sat down one day to ask these questions: what are talents? What are gifts? Do I have any talent? If yes, how do I know? If I discover my talents and gifts, how do I develop and use them so that I can be useful to others and become fulfilled? The following lines will provide answers to your questions.
Talents are natural capacities or abilities, special and peculiar to individuals. One who has a talent to do something finds it much easier, with free flowing interests, to do that work. Everybody has one talent or the other. It may be talent for music or for science courses. You may have talent to do well in art courses or commercial courses. As a youth you may discover, like David and Joseph in the Bible that you have the talent of leadership and organization. You too have a talent. Do you know it?
How do I know my own talent? This may be your next question. Well, it’s easy. Think of those things you love to do, the good things that interest you most. I mean, the things you easily and constantly want to do. You call Mathematics, or Physics or Literature or account your favourite subject! Yes, that may be your talent. Whenever you see a group of people or things you always like to step in to arrange, organize and lead them aright. That’s a sign of leadership talent. You have good voice, you sing well, you play musical instruments and spend a long time in singing, you are music talent. That thing, I mean good thing you have a strong desire to become and do and you pray about is your talent. Look at the things you draw very well, you have the talent for Fine Art. Think on these verses of the Bible: ‘’A gift is a precious stone in the eye of him that hath it,withersoever it turneth, it prospers’’ (Proverbs17:8). ‘’A man’s gift makes a way for him, and brings him before great men’’(Proverbs18:16)
Now that you have discovered your talents you need to develop them. You need to improve on them and become better and better in them. To develop your talent, number one, practise that gift. ‘’Practice makes for perfection’’ they said. Make use of every opportunity to practise. Get your notebooks and textbooks and practise those subjects –Physics, Mathematics or Literature or Fine Art, etc. If yours is music, sing. Join your church choir and school fellowship. Practise the instrument. If your talent is for leadership, don’t shy away from responsibilities. Love people, get along with people, don’t be offended. Teach and direct people in the right way. If you have talent to know languages, get near the teacher, participate in the class, speak it and you will develop it. You need also to pray to God to help you develop it. ‘‘Ask and you shall receive’’(Matthew 7:7).
To demonstrate your talent, you need to ‘‘Do something everytime’’. As you develop right intentions to help others, do all the time. If you do all these things ‘‘to him that hath, it shall be given, and he shall have abundance’’ (Matthew 25:29).
In summary, think, act, talk, and conduct yourself like you want to become. Learn to act like and acquire the skills of people you want to be.
