“Hello young man, this is a case of food poisoning”. “What did you eat last before the episode?”, the doctor asked keenly.

“Chai.. This world is wicked!, how could my cousin poison me after all I have done for him”. ” No wonder he chose to serve me a special meal during the wedding”. “I suspected this!”. “Mum warned me oo”. These were the words of Obinna, a middle aged young man at the accident and emergency unit of a hospital somewhere in Nigeria.

Is there anything wrong with the above tantrum?
YES, a whole lot.
This, painfully has torn apart formidable relationships between kins, friends, relatives and even close family members.

This is one diagnosis that has overtime being misinterpreted by an average Nigerian.

Food poisoning

Is food poisoning actually a careful plan by a supposed enemy to kill or harm another by the use of dangerous chemicals “poisons ” or juju introduced into food or drink?

Is it a spiritual issue per say, don’t want to sound controversial anyway?

What really is food poisoning?

This is the contamination of food by microorganisms like bacteria, fungi or virus and other toxins.

How did I come in contact with microorganism? I washed my hands before eating….

Yeah..
You did!
But these organisms are found foods, especially meat, diary products like milk and egg, vegetables and infact all edibles including drinks!

Should I then not eat them to avoid food poisoning?

No!
They can only cause harm when they contain microorganisms and toxins.

How do I then prevent this?

Very simple!
Make sure you cook every food especially meat well before consumption.
Wash your fruits and vegetables properly with clean water and salt.
Do not buy cooked food from unknown sources.
Eat food at parties with caution because the method of preparation in some cases is questionable.

These signs and symptoms show that you are already down with food poisoning

Diarrhea
Vomiting
Increase in body temperature
Weakness
Loss of skin tugor…this will be assessed in the hospital to ascertain the level of dehydration.

Does it mean I will not survive this?

No you will.
Just be honest in answering all the questions the health care provider will ask you
Intravenous fluid will be given to you to replace lost fluid.
Antipyretics will also help reduce the temperature.
Have enough rest
Comply to other care plans by the health team.

Food poisoning is not Juju 😷😷

Stay safe!!
