The poem in my knowledge and understanding is about the Mother Earth, it’s an awareness about saving earth from destruction, also a plea to humans to change their attitude towards Nature. She pleads in agony to be noticed and not ignored and hopes for a change or a saviour.
I’m going to be taking a paragraph to explain each line and stanza:
Analysing the first stanza of the poem, I could tell the writer is reminiscing on a past happening. How it once was and the way she expected it to be. This actually could be applied to many happenings in the world right now, our lives, society, government, the world, the Mother Earth. So many scenes comes to my mind, but then let’s forge ahead.
The second stanza talks about “forgotten beauty brought to life” you may at this point say this is speaking about a lady, but then it could be something else looking at the first line “I come alive at night”, I know what night is, it is calmness, peace, serenity, beauty (where there’s light), breezy and it reveals the true image of nature. Let’s take the next line, “by the dancing lights on my glistening path” I could see ‘dancing light’ as a personification. Lights don’t dance, so here the writer likened an inanimate to the action of a living thing. Then “as I flow gently towards the sea” the sea here talks about the serenity, beauty, calmness, absolute tranquility, and cleanliness. “Reflection of the way it used to be” the writer is still reflecting on past happenings. She is weak at this point.
In this stanza the writer is asking if there are none who will care for her and stop the grinding cycle of destruction, she lost hope in search for a saviour because all she can see is man Feasting, laughing, living, dying…. No one at this point cares, everyone has forgotten where they are and who’s been looking after them since time immemorial “MOTHER EARTH”.
She is seriously pleading to humans to restore her to how it used to be and bring back the splendour that was once hers.
Humans need to be educated on how to keep their environment clean and safe from hazards and health threatening issues.
More awareness and campaigns should be done about saving earth from destruction.
We should reduce, reuse and recycle some materials, buy reusable materials and not disposable ones like plates, plastics, glass, cups, napkins as this constitute a huge amount of waste.
Let’s conserve water, one can switch to filtered tap water instead of bottled water. You’d be saving money and also help reduce plastic waste in the process. Also turn off the tap after use to avoid excess water flowing into the drainage.
Taking care of earth is not just a responsibility, it’s a necessity. Weather patterns are changing, sea levels are rising and this can threaten food production and can cause catastrophic flooding across the globe. Countries must take drastic action to avoid a future with irreversible damage to our ecosystems.
I believe if humans can come together in unity and wage war against the injustice we inflict on Nature, take care of our environments by keeping it clean, avoiding dispose of waste carelessly, noise pollution, plant more trees. Walk, bike, to reduce greenhouse gases.
I’m greatly excited about this poem competition, I’ve gained more knowledge adding to mine on how to save our dear Earth and I’ll take it further in creating campaigns about sensitising my community, country and world at large on the benefits of saving Mother Nature. So help me God.
